Jacob Lerma '27, a sophomore at Jesuit High School, has already made a name for himself on the wrestling mat. Starting varsity as a freshman is no small feat, but Lerma didn't just stop there—he went on to reach the finals of the league championships, a rare accomplishment for someone so young.
Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Lerma is determined to push his limits and improve his wrestling skills. "My goals for this season are to grow my wrestling skills and capabilities," Lerma shares. "I want to be able to outlast my opponent in all situations and do my best to win the match."
Reflecting on his experience from last year, Lerma highlights a lesson that has shaped his mindset: "One lesson I learned from last year is how nothing in this sport is just handed to you, but you have to put in the work if you want to be the best." This wisdom continues to drive him forward as he prepares for the challenges of the new season.
Lerma's story of growth and perseverance on the mat recalls the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with the angel. Just as the biblical Jacob wrestled all night and refused to give up until he was blessed, Jacob Lerma brings that same tenacity to every match, refusing to back down no matter the challenge. His determination to overcome obstacles mirrors the resilience of his namesake.
While wrestling is a significant part of Lerma's life, he also finds time for other interests. "One hobby I enjoy is playing video games with my friends and brother, which gives me a break from the stress of school and sports," he says. This balance helps him recharge and stay focused, both on the mat and in the classroom.
Outside of wrestling, Lerma is proud of his academic achievements, having earned straight A's last year. He attributes much of his personal growth to his father, who he describes as his role model. "He is my role model in almost everything he does," Lerma reflects. "I look up to the way he supports our family and works hard to provide for me. He always has the best advice whenever I'm in need and is always willing to help and support me."
As for life after Jesuit, Lerma has clear aspirations: "After Jesuit, I would like to go to college and travel the world. I want to find someone to spend the rest of my life with and start a family. Additionally, I want to spend my life living out the Word of God and making the world a better place, no matter if it's small kind actions that get me there or grandiose deeds."
With his determination, talent, and a strong support system, Jacob Lerma is set for another standout season and a bright future ahead—much like his biblical namesake, he wrestles not just for victory, but for personal growth and a higher purpose.
