The Jesuit High School Cross Country team and their legendary coach, Walt Lange, were honored this morning at the California State Capitol for their remarkable achievement of winning the 2024 State Championship—their 10th in school history.
The recognition began with a proclamation highlighting the team's exceptional season and their representation of Jesuit High School's core values of excellence, perseverance, and service. Special mention was given to the outstanding performances of the athletes who competed in the championship: Isaac Abbott '26, Lucas Albert '27, Chase Cressman '25, Drake Hofer '26, Kyle Jakary '26, Rafael Jopson '27, Navin Kadel '25, Matthew Ogilvie '27 and Ryan Tait '27.
One senator marveled at the team's endurance, noting that four of the athletes ran the challenging 5-kilometer course at a pace of 5 minutes per mile—a feat of extraordinary athleticism.
Coach Walt Lange, who has been leading the Jesuit Cross Country program since 1971, was also celebrated for his unparalleled contributions to the sport. Over his illustrious career, Coach Lange has received numerous accolades, including:
-
California Coach of the Year (1981, California Coaches Association)
-
National Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year (2010, National High School Coaches Association)
-
CIF Model Coach Award (2008)
Coach Lange was also the recent recipient of the Joe Newton Award for Lifetime Achievement, further cementing his legacy as one of the most respected figures in cross country.
During the ceremony, senators highlighted the team's incredible dedication, both on and off the course. One senator spoke of the athletes' grueling training regimen, which includes logging 60 miles a week, running in the early morning hours, and braving all types of weather. Another senator reflected on the team's academic excellence, noting that all the athletes maintain high GPAs while balancing their demanding athletic commitments.
The team was also commended for living out Jesuit's mission of being Men for Others, volunteering regularly and demonstrating sportsmanship and kindness within their community.
This recognition not only celebrated the team's state title but also their impact as ambassadors of Jesuit High School. Principal Dr. Michael Wood and Athletic Director Hank Weinberger were acknowledged for their leadership in supporting the team's success and ensuring the program's continued growth.
As one senator shared, "This team is a perfect example of excellence and fulfills the mission of Jesuit to excel and serve the community."
Congratulations to the Jesuit Cross Country team, Coach Walt Lange, and the entire Jesuit community for this incredible honor!
